Effective listening crucial to being a good leader — Bridget Tychus

Bridget Tychus, an international director with Lions International, tells NAOMI CHIMA about her membership of the association, and other issues

What motivated you to join Lions International, and how has your journey with the organisation evolved since then?

I was motivated to join Lions International 41 years ago because of my strong desire to serve my community and make a tangible difference in the lives of others. The deal here is to give back to society and make the world better than I met it. I realised early enough that as an individual, one can do so little, but by joining hands with people who share the same values and interests, the sky is the limit.

Over the years, my journey with the organisation has been incredibly fulfilling, marked by opportunities to lead and expand its initiatives and service reach across various regions. I have grown not just as a leader but as a person, learning the true value of collaboration, compassion and commitment to service.
What are the most significant challenges you’ve faced in your role as an international director of Lions International, and how have you overcome them?

One of the most significant challenges has been navigating the diverse cultural and socio-economic landscapes across Africa. Ensuring that association’s initiatives are relevant and impactful in each unique context requires a deep understanding and respect for local customs and needs. I have overcome these challenges by fostering strong local partnerships, being adaptable in my approach, and consistently engaging with community leaders to ensure our efforts align with communal needs and priorities..

Can you share a key moment or achievement in your journey with Lions International that you’re particularly proud of?
A key moment that stands out was the successful construction, completion and hand over to Lagos State, the Cancer Treatment and Screening Center situated at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, Ikeja.

It was the first project by then Governor of Lagos State, Babatunde Fashola, upon assumption of office. Prior to the completion of the project, the hospital had no such facility. The centre serves not just patients within the metropolis but those from other parts of the country as well.

Another project I am proud of is the state-of-the-art dialysis centre at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital in Surulere. The project, which provides services to thousands across the nation at affordable cost, is a testament to the power of collective action, and the dedication of partner donors and volunteers. It is a project that not only adds quality to lives but also demonstrates the incredible potential of Lions International to mobilise resources and expertise for global causes.

What advice do you have for aspiring leaders looking to make a significant impact in their communities and professional fields?

My advice to aspiring leaders is to lead with empathy, stay committed to your values, and never underestimate the power of teamwork. Making a significant impact requires a clear vision, the ability to inspire others, and the perseverance to see initiatives through, even in the face of challenges. Also, continuous learning and adapting are crucial in today’s dynamic world. An aspiring leader must ensure that they are true to their words. A leader must be trusted and accountable for their actions.

How do you maintain and foster collaboration with diverse stakeholders in the course of your duties?

Collaboration with diverse stakeholders is rooted in building trust, maintaining open lines of communication, and aligning on shared goals. I prioritise understanding the unique perspectives and objectives of each stakeholder, ensuring that our partnerships are mutually beneficial and focused on sustainable outcomes. Regular dialogue to enhance the collaboration and buy-in of stakeholders is critical, and transparency at all levels is key to fostering and strengthening these relationships.
What are some of the most valuable lessons you’ve learnt from your various roles within Lions International?

One of the most valuable lessons I’ve learnt is the importance of effective listening. Understanding the needs and concerns of the communities we serve and the volunteers who make our work possible is crucial to success. I have also learnt that adaptability is essential; being willing to pivot and innovate in response to changing circumstances is key to maintaining the relevance and effectiveness of our initiatives. I have learnt to nurture the team spirit because a leader without a great team walking the leadership path with them is only  going taking a stroll.

You are on the board of Apex Tech Incorporated. What role does innovation play in the company’s approach to emerging market penetration?
Innovation, particularly through the integration of Artificial Intelligence, plays a pivotal role in our approach to emerging market penetration. AI allows us to analyze vast amounts of data, understand market trends, and tailor our products and services to meet the specific needs of each market. For example, we have developed AI-driven tools that help us anticipate customer preferences and optimise supply chains in real-time, which has been crucial in ensuring that we stay ahead of the competition. By leveraging AI, we can be more agile and responsive, ensuring that our strategies are not just effective but also sustainable in the long term. Innovation isn’t just about technology, it is about rethinking how we approach challenges and opportunities, ensuring that we deliver value in ways that are both impactful and meaningful to the communities we serve.

What are the key qualities or skills that can help one succeed as board members of international organisations?

Successful board members need to have a global mindset, strategic thinking, and a strong ethical foundation. They must be able to navigate complex issues, understand diverse cultural contexts, and make decisions that balance the interests of various stakeholders. Additionally, effective communication and the ability to foster collaboration are crucial skills. Successful board members must always remember that they are brand ambassadors. From the get-go, the board member should be intentional about achieving the objectives of a brand ambassador who brings no shame to the brand. They should realise that there are over a million members but very few board members. This makes the position very important and sacred.

How do you ensure that the initiatives and programs you lead are sustainable and have a long-lasting impact?
Ensuring sustainability requires a focus on capacity building, local ownership, and continuous evaluation. One example that illustrates this approach is the initiative on diabetes, being one of Lions International’s global causes. This initiative encourages advocacy, screening and referral for further treatment where necessary. We did not only build diabetes centres but also trained hospital staff to acquire necessary skills to treat and manage the resources needed to run the centres.

We also set up monitoring systems to ensure the diabetes centres, even though handed to the state healthcare system remains functional over time. By involving the hospital community in every step, we ensured that the programme was not just a temporary fix but a long-lasting solution to this silent killer, and that the hospital management can independently maintain the facility. This approach to sustainability, where we prioritise local empowerment and ongoing support, ensures that our programmes continue to benefit communities long after we have completed the initial project.

What role does mentorship play in your career, and how have you supported others in their professional growth?

Mentorship has been a cornerstone of my career, both as a mentee and a mentor. I have benefited immensely from the guidance of experienced leaders and have made it a priority to support others in their growth. I believe in providing mentorship that is tailored to the individual’s goals, offering both guidance and opportunities for practical experience. No leader sprouted themselves into office without guidance and encouragement. I therefore strongly believe that we all need trusted mentors as rearview mirrors. However, it is advisable that one does research on one’s prospective mentor to ensure that the person has values one holds dear, and that the person is who one wants to emulate.

Which are your favourite books or authors that have had a significant impact on your life?

One of my favourite books is titled, ‘Becoming’ by Michelle Obama (former First Lady of United States of America). It is currently my favourite, because it beautifully captures the journey of growth, resilience, and finding one’s voice. Michelle Obama’s words, such as “Your story is what you have, what you will always have. It is something to own,” inspire me to embrace my own story and use it to empower others. The book’s exploration of identity, purpose, and the power of perseverance resonates deeply with me and encourages me to continue pushing boundaries in my personal and professional life.

Another author who has greatly influenced me is Maya Angelou. Her work, especially, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, speaks to the resilience of the human spirit and the importance of self-worth. Her quote, “We may encounter many defeats, but we must not be defeated,” reminds me that challenges are part of the journey, but they should never define our destinies. Both authors have taught me the power of voice and the importance of staying true to one’s values, regardless of the challenges faced.
What role does your faith and the honorific title of Knight of John Wesley play in your daily life and work?

My faith is the cornerstone of my life, guiding every decision I make and every action I take. The honorific title of Knight of John Wesley is deeply personal to me, as it reflects my lifelong commitment to service, humility, and living a life of purpose. This title is not just an honour but a daily reminder of the values I hold dear—kindness, integrity, and a commitment to serving others. I demonstrate this in my office as Chairperson, Lagos Chapter Council of Knights. My faith gives me strength in difficult times, provides clarity in decision-making, and keeps me grounded amidst the many responsibilities I carry. It is through my faith that I find the courage to lead with compassion and the wisdom to navigate the complexities of my roles. Every day, I strive to embody the principles of my faith in both my personal and professional life, knowing that I am part of something much greater than myself. Being a Knight of John Wesley is not just a title—it is a calling to live a life of service, to uplift others, and to make a lasting impact in the world.

How do you stay motivated and energised given your busy schedule and numerous responsibilities?

Staying motivated and energised comes from my deep passion for the work I do and the lives it touches. Knowing that every effort I make contributes to something greater—whether it’s improving the lives of individuals through Lions International or driving innovation at Apex Tech—fuels my drive. I also draw energy from my faith, which serves as a constant reminder of my purpose and gives me the strength to face each day with optimism and resilience. Surrounding myself with a supportive network of family, friends, and colleagues also keeps me inspired and energised. I find that moments of rest and reflection, whether through prayer, spending time with nature, or enjoying a quiet evening with a good book, help me recharge and maintain a positive outlook.

What hobbies or activities do you engage in to unwind?

I enjoy reading, travelling, and spending time with my family. Travelling, in particular, allows me to step away from my daily responsibilities and immerse myself in new cultures and experiences. Whether it is exploring the vibrant streets of Seoul, South Korea, or the rich history of Kenya; travelling gives me a fresh perspective and a sense of rejuvenation. Reading is another passion of mine. It is a way to unwind, learn, and explore new ideas.
